In the high-stakes world of ophthalmic surgery, precision isn’t optional—it’s essential. That’s why surgical teams across the country turn to MEDiSURG , a company known for its unmatched expertise in eye surgery equipment sales, service, and technician training.

But MEDiSURG didn’t start as a large organization. It began with one man’s vision to elevate surgical care through better tools, training, and trust. This is the story of John Weymouth , a biomedical engineer whose journey from medical research for the soldier on a U.S. Army research base to the world of ophthalmics medical equipment laid the foundation for what MEDiSURG is today: the only company in the world offering specialized training and support for phacoemulsification and retinal surgery systems.

. A Career Built on Service and Innovation

John’s journey began in 1975 , as a biomedical engineer for the United States Army , working on advanced lab equipment for germ warfare. His talent and passion for medical technology soon led him to Xenotec , where he entered the world of eye ultrasound systems. After several corporate transitions—including time at Berkeley Bioengineering , Coopervision , and ultimately Alcon Laboratories —John rose through the ranks as a Sales Leader, Product Manager, and National Top Performer.

At Alcon, he spearheaded product development for diagnostic imaging and corneal topography systems , launching new devices under budget and ahead of schedule. He even earned the first-ever “Best Cookie” award for supporting the global customer service team hands-on.

Sales Success and a Personal Mission

After 10 years in product management, John returned to sales in Indiana —driven by a family need and personal calling. Despite increased quotas, he consistently exceeded national expectations, once selling 22 surgical systems in a year , compared to a national average of 13.

But after 33 years in the corporate world of ophthalmology, John felt it was time to do something different. Something more personal. Something more independent.

MEDiSURG: A Garage Startup with a Global Impact

In a garage in Carmel, Indiana , MEDiSURG was born. The name? Suggested by a 14-year-old friend of his son. The domain name? Purchased on a second try—for just $19. Today, that brand is trusted across the country for eye surgical equipment sales, service, and training .

After moving to Anderson and eventually Indianapolis , MEDiSURG found its home—and its niche: specializing in phacoemulsification and vitrectomy systems for cataract and retinal surgeries.

Today and the Future of MEDiSURG

Today, MEDiSURG operates with a dedicated team of five professionals who share John Weymouth’s mission: to deliver exceptional service and support to the ophthalmic surgical community.

At MEDiSURG, the customer isn’t just a priority—they’re the foundation of everything we do. Every decision, service, and solution is driven by a deep commitment to doing what’s best for our clients. Whether that means staying late to support a case, customizing training for a specific team, or finding cost-effective equipment solutions, our team goes above and beyond to ensure surgical centers are fully supported—every step of the way. Our success is measured by theirs.

Together, they develop high-quality educational content, rebuild and refurbish surgical systems, and provide nationwide equipment servicing and staff training. With deep industry expertise and a strong customer-first mindset, the team helps surgical centers across the country stay equipped, informed, and ready for every procedure.

Today, MEDiSURG stands as a leader in ophthalmic equipment training, offering hands-on education and certification for biomeds and service technicians worldwide.
What began as a personal mission has grown into the only global training center focused exclusively on servicing phaco and vitrectomy systems.

Looking ahead, MEDiSURG is positioning itself as a global leader in ophthalmic equipment training. Imagine waking up one morning and looking out the window—only to find that everything seems blurred, as if you’re peering through a steamy shower door. The colors are duller, the sunlight glares painfully, and reading a book feels like trying to focus through frosted glass. You rub your eyes, thinking they’ll adjust, but the haze remains.
